Payment
KOK Edit accepts payment via PayPal (electronic transfers from bank accounts or credit cards) for editing services rendered. If you are located outside the United States and want to pay by transfer from a bank account, determine whether your country is one of the many in which PayPal accounts are available. If you are outside the United States, you must specify that your payment be made in U.S. dollars. If you want to pay by credit card, you dont have to have a PayPal account.
Click on the credit-card/PayPal icon above to make a payment to KOK Edit now. In the window that opens, youll be prompted to type in an invoice number. After you do so, either click the credit-card icon or hit the Enter key on your keyboard. This will take you to a new page where you can fill in the amount you are paying and other transaction details. During this process, KOK Edit will not be given any information about the credit card or bank account that you are using to make payment.
Payment for KOK Edits invoices is due within the time frame specified on the invoices, and payment should be made in the name of KOK Edit, which is a sole proprietorship, rather than in the name of Katharine OMoore-Klopf.
You can also use the payment icon to purchase the 16-page onscreen booklet Getting Started as a Freelance Copyeditor. When youre prompted to input an invoice number, just type in Getting Started. Once your payment has been received, you will be sent the booklet by e-mail. (Note: The booklet is onscreen only. To prevent infringement on its copyright, it is security-protected so that it cannot be copied or saved under a new name as a new file.)
Fees
Why does KOK Edit not post a fee schedule here? Every manuscript, just like every client, is different. The level of editing needed, and thus the amount of time spent, varies with each project. Some clients prefer to pay page rates or project fees instead of hourly rates. Therefore, fees are negotiated for each project, depending on level of editing, project parameters, and project time frame. (However, you can get an idea of the range of fees charged for editing in the publishing industry by following many of the links on this page.) In all fee negotiations, 1 manuscript page is defined as 250 words; physical pagination is irrelevant.
For large projects, KOK Edit may require periodic partial fee payments to be made during the editing process. Many times, a down payment of one third to one half of large project fees is required. Rush projects are accepted when possible, but they incur higher fees than nonrush jobs do.
All fee quotes are valid for 30 days; if you do not decide to go ahead with the project until after 30 days, KOK Edit reserves the right to revise the quote. If the size, scope, or nature of the project changes after a quote has been accepted, a revised fee may be negotiated.
Payment is accepted electronically via PayPal or in the form of bank wire transfers, business checks, or bank cashier's checks; personal checks are not generally accepted. Please note that if you pay using a bank wire transfer, your bank will charge you a fee for doing so. You will have to request bank-account details from KOK Edit for your bank to be able to complete the wire transfer. Late payment of a invoice from KOK Edit may result in a late-payment fee of 15% of the original invoice amount.
Forms and Contracts
Whether youre hiring a freelance editor or writer or working as one, you want a contract in place. This can be either an informal or a complex legal document. Whats important is that both parties are protected by a written agreement. KOK Edit has a small library of agreements that she adapts for use with clients. Two are here as samples: a project estimate letter and an editorial contract.
