Mother's toast to the newlyweds:

I have to say that I can’t believe my first baby is old enough to be married. Becky, you were the child on whom I learned to be a parent. You were always an easy child, sweet and loving. I remember all those nights of reading you a bedtime story, then singing six songs to you—and using the imaginary can of “monster spray” to make all the scary bedtime creatures disappear. Then time passed so fast that it seemed like the next thing I knew, you were on your own, handling everything yourself. Now you’re married—to Li, who thinks he hides the fact that he’s really a big teddy bear at heart. You two are sweet to each other, and I advise you to try to always be that way. May you have a long life together, full of lessons to learn and joy to share. I love you both.

Stepfather's toast to the newlyweds:

I remember when I first met Becky. She was 9. I wanted her to like me. Kathy and I took her to a beach to fly a kite. The wind was so strong that we had to put rocks in Becky’s pockets so that she could keep her feet on the ground while she held on to the fishing pole that was attached to the kite. Becky and I liked each other immediately. It’s amazing to think that my favorite very tall 11-year-old, for whom I had special training wheels made so that she could learn to ride an adult bicycle, is now married. It feels like just a few years ago I was teaching a certain 17-year-old how to drive, and now she’s married. I remember a rescue trip to fix a flat tire. Becky had a spare tire but no jack, and Li waited there with her in the rain till I arrived. Becky told me that he was “just a friend,” but I knew right then that Li wanted to be more than her friend. And here we are today celebrating the start of their lifelong friendship. May the two of you always be best friends.
